Mehrdad R. Izady (geb. 1962), einer der führenden Kurdologen und Historiker unserer Zeit.



M. R. Izady (kurd. Mihrdad Îzedî) ist als Kurde im Iran geboren. 1976 absolvierte sein Bachelor in den Fächern Geschichte, Politik und Geographie an der Universität von Kansas. Zwei Jahre später machte er im Fach Geographie seinen Master und ein Jahr später den Master in Politik, Internationale Beziehungen und in Nahost-Wissenschaft an der Syracuse Universität so wie an der Universität von Columbia 1986. An der Universität von Columbia promovierte er schließlich in Nahost-Wissenschaften, wo er 1992 seinen Doktortitel erhielt. In seiner Doktorarbeit befasste er sich mit seinem eigenen Volk, den Kurden, und betrachtete in dieser Dissertation  die Kurden in allen Facetten.

Danach ging er als Lektor an die Havard Universität und lehrte dort in den Nahostwissenschaften.

Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit ist er ein gefragter Experte zum Thema Kurden und Naher Osten, so wurde er auch in zwei Untersuchungsausschüssen des amerikanischen Kongresses über die Kurden im Nahen Osten als Experte hinzugezogen.

Ein weiteres großes Werk, die Übersetzung des Sherefname, begann er nach seiner Ernennung zum Doktor. Bisher hat er mit eigenen Anmerkungen den ersten Band des Sherefname veröffentlicht.

Außerdem veröffentlichte er zahlreiche Artikel und arbeitete an asiatischen Enzyklopädien zum Thema Kurden mit.
